The Story

For years, we've been asked the same question:

"When are Y1 going to make a hockey shoe?"

Our answer was always the same - not until we can build one that genuinely moves the game forward.

So that's exactly what we set out to do.

Over the last year, we've worked with more than 750 hockey players, from club players to senior internationals, listening to every frustration, every wish list and every detail that makes the difference on the pitch. We travelled around the world to work with experienced footwear designers, technical developers and specialist manufacturing partners, challenging every component until we believed we had created something worthy of carrying the Y1 name.

This isn't a running shoe with a hockey outsole.

It's a hockey shoe, designed from the ground up for hockey.

And this is only the beginning.

Rather than waiting until every last detail is perfect behind closed doors, we've chosen to build the future of Y1 footwear with the people who matter most - the hockey community.

Every element has been designed with purpose. The exoframe support system works seamlessly with the lacing to create a secure, locked-in fit, while the responsive EVA midsole and NitroPad™ heel cushioning provide the perfect balance of comfort, stability and energy return. Underfoot, FlexSpyne™ enhances torsional support for confident movement through every cut, sprint and change of direction.

The lightweight, water-resistant upper is reinforced where players need it most, with a protective heel counter and durable wrapped toe construction built to withstand the demands of drag flicking, tackles and repeated ball impacts. A high-performance rubber outsole featuring Y1's unique multidirectional traction pattern delivers exceptional grip across all artificial turf surfaces, while integrated water-release channels help maintain traction in wet conditions.

Designed alongside players and refined through extensive wear testing, this is more than the launch of a new shoe.

Technical

ExoFrame

An integrated external support structure that works with the lacing system to deliver targeted midfoot containment, reducing internal foot movement for enhanced stability during explosive multidirectional movements.

Dryflex Upper

A lightweight, water-resistant engineered upper material designed to minimise water absorption while maintaining exceptional durability and structural support. Built to keep the shoe lighter for longer in wet playing conditions.

Advanced Heel protection

A reinforced heel counter that increases rearfoot stability by securely locking the heel in place. The hardened construction also provides additional protection from impacts, helping players feel confident through every movement.

WrapGuard Toe

An extended abrasion-resistant toe reinforcement that protects the toe during drag flicking and repeated toe drag movements. The wrapped construction also provides additional protection against ball impacts without compromising flexibility.

QuickPull Heel Tab

An integrated rear pull tab engineered for fast and effortless entry, allowing players to put the shoe on quickly while maintaining a clean, secure heel fit.

Midsole

Responsive EVA

A performance-tuned EVA midsole engineered to provide the ideal balance of cushioning and stability. The carefully selected density delivers a responsive ride while maintaining the platform needed for rapid changes of direction.

NitroPad™

A high-energy ETPU heel insert positioned beneath the rearfoot to increase impact absorption and long-lasting comfort. Designed to reduce fatigue while returning energy throughout the game.

FlexSpyne™

A lightweight thermoplastic stability shank integrated through the midfoot to enhance torsional rigidity without restricting natural forefoot flex. FlexSpyne™ improves rotational stability and creates a more efficient transfer of power through every stride.

Outsole

GripRubber Compound

A premium-performance rubber compound engineered to maximise traction across both wet and dry artificial turf surfaces. Optimised to deliver the ideal balance of grip, durability and long-term wear resistance.

Weight Optimised Split Sole

A strategically engineered split outsole that removes unnecessary rubber from low-wear zones to reduce overall weight while maintaining maximum traction and durability where it matters most.

Y-Traction Lugs

A unique multidirectional lug geometry inspired by the Y1 identity. Designed to provide exceptional grip during acceleration, braking and rapid directional changes, delivering confident traction in every phase of play.

AquaFlow Channels

Integrated drainage channels within the outsole allow surface water to disperse more efficiently beneath the shoe, helping maintain traction and reducing hydroplaning in wet conditions.

 

Delivery and ordering

This isn't a standard pre-order.

When you place your order today, your pair becomes part of the first Y1 production run. Every order helps determine the exact size breakdown we manufacture, meaning your shoes are being built specifically for this founding group of players rather than taken from existing stock.

Because of this bespoke production process, delivery is expected in January 2027.

We know that's a wait, but we'd rather spend the extra time getting it right than rush the launch of something we've spent more than a year developing.

The good news? January is the perfect time for a fresh pair of astros. As pitches become wetter and the second half of the season begins, your brand new Y1 shoes will arrive exactly when players need them most.
